If you have ever create a multi column CSS layout, you probably have had to clear the elements after your columns. If not, the general technique is to have a wrapper div with floated columns then a a clear div to make sure the content from then on starts below the longest of the floated columns.
If you don’t clear the floats, the markup occurring after the floats will be positioned incorrectly and will cause some unsightly overlap issues.
Note: A multi column layout is just one example since floated elements obviously have lots of other uses as well.
The old lame way
Here is how you would traditionally code something like this using a clear div. First the CSS:
.wrapper {

.sidebar {
float: left;
width: 100px;
}
.sidebar2 {
float: right;
width: 100px;
}
.content {
margin: 0 100px;
}
.clear {
clear: both;
}
and the HTML:
<div class="wrapper"> <div class="sidebar"> .. </div> <div class="sidebar2"> .. </div> <div class="content"> .. </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div>
The super cool new way
Instead of using a clear div at all, we can simply apply overflow: hidden to the wrapper. This basically auto clears the floated elements. The resulting code is not only cleaner, but it works across all browsers. Yes, even IE6 works correctly! The updated CSS:
.wrapper {
overflow: hidden;
}
.sidebar {
float: left;
width: 100px;
}
.sidebar2 {
float: right;
width: 100px;
}
.content {
margin: 0 100px;
}
and the updated HTML:
<div class="wrapper"> <div class="sidebar"> .. </div> <div class="sidebar2"> .. </div> <div class="content"> .. </div> </div>
I use this overflow: hidden method all the time and never have to use the clear property at all. It makes me feel so good inside.
