OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard comes bundled with Apache 2 and decent build of PHP 5, but .htaccess files won’t work by default. If you aren’t familiar with Apache, .htaccess files are a pretty cool way to customize or overwrite settings on a per directory basis. Things I’ve used .htaccess for include mod_rewrite rules (for pretty URLs), increasing the PHP upload filesize, and pointing log files to a custom destination.
There is a pretty simple change you can make to enable the use of .htaccess files. We’ll be using the command line for this one, but you should already love the terminal right? Fire up your terminal program of choice and type in this command:
cd /etc/apache2/users
This directory will contain a .conf file for each user on the machine. For my user, the file is called justin.conf and we’ll need to edit it a little bit. If you know how to edit on the command line using vi or another editor, feel free to do so (but make sure to use sudo since the file is owned by root). If you would like to edit in your default text editor, you can use the open command:
open justin.conf
This opens up the file in TextMate for me and looks like this:
<Directory "/Users/justin/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory>
To enable .htaccess, change line 3 to look like this:
AllowOverride All
Save the file and enter your login info if prompted. The .conf file is owned by root, so OSX will re-authenticate to make sure you have the rights. After saving the file, open up the System Preferences, click the Sharing icon, then toggle the Web Server off then on. This will restart Apache and use your updated settings.
I access my local server using the URL http://localhost/~justin which has a web root of /Users/justin/Sites. I can create a .htaccess file anywhere within my web root and it will affect that directory and any sub directories it contains. I’ll cover the syntax of .htaccess files in a future post.

Any ideas how I make .htaccess work from there?
You should be able to use the AllowOverride still, it’s just might be in a separate file. Did you see the directory listed in your user.conf file? If not, try editing this file:
and look for your path in there. Assuming you find it listed in a Directory tag, just add the needed code in there.
I tried your way and it didn’t work (kept getting forbidden errors), after a bunch of research I found out that there is a second file /private/etc/apache2/username.conf Applied the updates you mention above to this and it works. Just thought I’d add this here in case someone else is having the same problem in the future. Thanks for the info.
